URBAN FEVER by Jürgen Bürgin | Win a copy of URBAN FEVER photobook

HAPPY WORLD PHOTOBOOK DAY!

The big urban landscapes can make us forget that every city holds hundreds, if not millions, of people, all with different stories, places to be and different circumstances of the day unfolding. Urban Fever is a remembrance, discovery and exploration to exactly that.

Photographer Jürgen Bürgin, currently living in Berlin, has exhibited multiple times not only in Berlin, but London too. With such success from his solo exhibition, ‘Urban Ballads’, Bürgin has been nominated for prestige awards such as ‘Urban Photographer of the Year’ as well as ‘Sony World Photography Award’.

‘Urban Fever’ contains 112 pages of stunning photography, created into one phenomenal archive of scenes from city life. Bürgin spent six years in Tokyo, New York, Barcelona, Hong Kong, Saigon, Shanghai, Lisbon and Berlin, all to capture these incredible images.

“We meet an elderly New Yorker who stops in the night bustle of the city. He directs his gaze upwards, somewhere outside the picture, perhaps on a billboard. For a moment, time stops, and we are trying to read from his eyes.”

You can tell instantly, this is a photographer who has spent time discovering new places and people, and most importantly, returning. Six years of learning someone’s life, learning where the best places to eat out are and learning the ever-growing train routes.

With each turn of a page, you never know what image will becoming next; a couple sat peacefully by a stream, a woman full of pride strolling glamorously in front of ordinary men or a man loosing his umbrella against the cities lit up advertisement stands. An element of surprise with every turn.

Bürgin has almost a modern twist on Henri Cartier-Bresson ‘decisive moment’. Each image seems effortlessly taken but yet it has a constructed approach to it; revealing all that Bürgin has learnt in his six years. He has really captured not only each city and its differences, but also the different locations within each of the cities. There’s also a strong sense of Bürgin’s loves of cinematic, with such constructed images shown in a deeply romantic way. You begin to love, not the iconic statues or the famous landmarks, but the people who make up these astonishing cities.
