Spring is well and truly underway and it even looks like the sun is trying to make an appearance. What better time to leave the comfy confines of your home to go out and explore the best of arts and culture the UK has to offer. From London to Edinburgh, here are 16 fantastic photography exhibitions to feast your eyes on.

 

Foundling Museum

Mark Neville questions what it is to be a child in his photo book and exhibition Child’s Play. He documents from the UK to Ukraine, showing us the environmental factors that children are brought up in and uses his project to encourage the need for play in children’s lives.

2017 celebrates 20 years of the Deutsche Börse prize celebrating photography at its best. With a copious amount of talent on show, this is something not to be missed, with work to suit anyone from Sophie Calle to Dana Lixenberg.

Contemporary artist Tillmans displays a variety of his favourite works throughout a series of rooms including photography, video and musical pieces. Tillmans lays bare his mind on the walls pushing the boundaries of photography.

Whitechapel Gallery

This exhibitions displays work from seventeen contemporary female artists from around the world. It is a female only show which turns the camera on women, by women, reflecting identity and experiences. Featuring works by Rineke Dijkstra to Nan Goldin

Spanning across 30 of Derby’s historic and beautiful buildings, Format Festival encourages the community to engage with an Array of artists. With this years theme of Habitat, the artists are exploring the theme including existence, displacement, heritage within our world.

Ruscha has been one of the most influential of his time across the board of painting photography and drawing. The national gallery of Scotland will be presenting a large span of his work including his series Thirty Four Parking Lots in Los Angeles.

Liverpool International Photography Festival

Open Eye Gallery

Liverpool

This international photography festival offers an array of work focusing on the Cities of Exchange between Liverpool and Hong Kong. It will feature work from Chinese and English photographers across both cities celebrating the diversity of cultures and the influence of each on their long history of exchanges.

Named the UK photography event of the year, this is not to be missed. With work from known galleries and photographers, its also a chance for new emerging exhibitors to show their work. A solo exhibitions of creative and striking portraits taking inspiration from theater, film and literature by Anneleen Lindsay, winner in nationwide exhibition - British Journal of Photography presents Portrait of Britain. Anneleen is who has been previously featured in the New York Times and Evening Standard is definitely one to keep on your radar.

With its first photographic exhibitions, RISE Gallery is presenting a selection of photographs from the 20th Century exploring the purpose of photography, the familiarity of it and the ability to capture fleeting moments. The exhibitions features work from Steve McCurry to Helmut Newton.

Modern Art Oxford

Arts at the Old Fire Station and Modern Art Oxford present the first major exhibition of portraits by photographer Kazem Hakimi.

Well known in the East Oxford community, Hakimi has been taking photographs for 30 years; for the past two years he has been working specifically on the OX4 project presented in these exhibitions. Hakimi has recorded his community by posing his customers against the same white wall at the back of his fish and chip shop on the Iffley Road in East Oxford.
